Welcome to all the new subscribers! Every Tuesday, I send out a book recommendation that is a bit under the radar of the usual bestsellers. I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather this week, so I’m rerunning a recommendation from last year of one of my favorite books, and I also recommend her other one, Bellwether Rhapsody, about a music conference that gets snowed into a hotel with a dark past. Let me know if you’ve read either of these, and enjoy!
What to Read This Week
Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia
What It’s About
Tuesday Mooney lives the life that I (and I suspect many other introverted book nerds) live, nothing too far out of the ordinary. She is good at her nonprofit job and loves rewatching The X-Files, and she’s got her routine down pat.
But it all changes one night when, at a fundraising event for her job, the richest man in Boston drops dead in the middle of the ballroom in a grandiose fashion. What’s more, the next day in his obituary, he leaves a strange clue, hinting that he is leaving his entire fortune to the first person to find it. This begins an epic treasure hunt across the city, with thousands playing and trying to race other teams to the finish line.
Tuesday is an unlikely contestant, but she was there that night, and she has some insider knowledge she’s ready to use. Forcing herself outside her comfort zone, she finds a few teammates along the way, and together they race across the city to find the hidden treasure.
Who Will Like It
This is the ultimate escapist novel without being too fluffy or too unrealistic—an escape novel for the happy ending skeptic, if you will. It’s got adventure, puzzles, mystery, but it also has a sweet story of friendship and learning that sometimes you have to step outside a little bit in order to live.
There’s also tons of pop culture references, so if you like anything from Twin Peaks to Edgar Allan Poe, you’re in for a treat. The more obscure pop culture you love, the more you’ll like this book.
Thanksgiving reading
I thought I’d feature a few newsletters I’ve been reading and enjoying if you’re finding yourself on your phone looking for articles to read over the holiday.
I love this format Elizabeth took for this week’s issue of What to Read If, highlighting interesting articles to discuss.
I’ve been loving the gigantic new release lists and fun recommendations Liberty Hardy has been putting together on What’s My Page Again?
Another newsletter that isn’t bookish that I’ve greatly enjoyed reading is Close Knit Notes, which features knitting essays and lovely musings on life and living slowly and enjoying things, which is a great change of pace for me.
