The Regrets — Amy Bonnaffons. Rachel and Thomas are two strangers who can’t seem to keep their eyes off each other on their bus route. When Rachel finally works up the courage to introduce herself to the handsome stranger, she learns that Thomas is everything she is looking for: he’s smart and fun and funny. But he’s also dead.
I love The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing (almost ashamedly? [If that's not a word, I don't care]). It's one of the very few late 90s novels I've reread. I think it holds up, sometimes in an almost jarring way.
P.S. I loved your October and November Stacks, and have curated a large portion of my winter’s reading from them. Thank you so much for what you do. I truly appreciate you.
I finished The Regrets. I wasn’t crazy about the ending, but I’d recommend it as a read to a couple of friends of mine who are a bit off kilter, as am I.
This is totally one of those books that people either love or hate the ending of, and I absolutely recommend it to offbeat readers! I have strangely not read any Grady Hendrix other than Horrorstor, which I read years ago, though his newer stuff has been on my shelf!
I received this book as a present when it was published in 2005. I came across it recently while organizing my books. I cannot remember any details but I remember really enjoying it at the time so now pushed along with your review, it has made its way onto my TBR/ TBRR? pile.
The Regrets reminds me a bit of Marc Levy's If Only It Were True -- also a love story involving a ghost. I really liked it, and it made Marc Levy a breakout star of French fiction. He's been a smash hit bestseller for decades, ever since.

It definitely held up in a jarring way — that's the best way to describe it. Seeing how little has changed was both shocking and refreshing.
Now I want to reread it again! It’s been awhile.

I'm so so excited and glad to hear that!!!
I just finished The Final Girl Support Group in one sitting; it’s hysterical, in a very dark kind of way.

Cassie, have you ready anything by Grady Hendrix?

Also I just love this cover!

I’ll have to check that out!
I always forget about this weird little ghost love story! I should read it this fall 💀
