The Grip of It — Jac Jemc. A young couple moves into a small house on the outskirts of town. While the move was prompted by not-so-great circumstances — James has a penchant for gambling and struggles to control his addiction — he and Julie are happy in their new home. For a while.
I enjoyed Black Sheep! Will be curious to hear your thoughts on it. Now I want to read The Grip of It even more (Sadie Hartman aka Mother Horror has said good things too!)
Several places! If you like thrillers, I'd recommend starting with The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James. She blends the two together and makes for a super great place to start. If you're looking for more traditional horror, The Changeling by Victor LaValle is one I loved, that takes a legend like a changeling and puts a modern spin on it. It is gruesome and contains lots of terrible things, so just a heads-up. If you want something not as gruesome but still in the horror category, The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher!

I've somehow still never read a Rachel Harrison despite owning (I think) all of them, and I've heard this is one of her best!
That's so cool.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a book classified as horror...definitely thriller, though. If I were to pick one horror novel, what should I pick?

You sold me on THE GRIP OF IT. Checking it out! And what a delightfully disturbing cover.
It’s hard to tell online, but my paperback has the weird faces only in gloss, so they only appear at JUST the right angle!
I’ve been thinking of picking this one up but you’ve convinced me!!
Love!!! Let me know how you like it!
Yes! I definitely think you'd like the Lydia Millet book then!
